Skin Beauty Pal Review: Does AI Diagnosis Really Work in India?
In India’s skincare boom, AI-powered apps are becoming the new "first opinion." One name that stands out is Skin Beauty Pal, an app that claims to scan your face using your phone’s camera and offer personalised skin insights, routines, and product recs.
But does it really work in the Indian context, across diverse skin tones, humidity, and local concerns like pigmentation and pollution damage?
We tested it across three skin types, spoke to a dermatologist, and analysed the app’s UI motion to find out.
Upon downloading the app, users are prompted to take a selfie in natural light. The AI then evaluates:
The scan takes about 10 seconds and renders results via a color-coded wheel—red for concern, green for healthy.
We tried it on:
Acne & Oil Detection The app was impressively accurate at spotting breakouts and oily zones, especially around the T-zone. This was consistent with what our dermatologist also observed.
Product Suggestions Felt Relevant. It recommended niacinamide-based serums and gentle face washes, aligning with dermatologist prescriptions for oily and inflamed skin.
Tone-Aware Recommendations. Unlike some Western apps, Skin Beauty Pal didn’t overprescribe whitening treatments. It instead focused on clarity and barrier repair, a welcome shift.
Wrinkle Analysis = Overhyped. The wrinkle detection seemed exaggerated, especially on the 31-year-old tester. Fine lines were flagged as “critical” when they were barely visible.
Pigmentation Accuracy Fluctuated. On deeper skin tones, the AI occasionally mistook natural tone variation as “spots,” which could lead to over-corrective product use.
Lighting Sensitivity: Even slight changes in light altered the results. Consistent lighting is crucial for accurate reads—something not all users will realise
“These apps are helpful for early detection, but they’re not a diagnosis tool. What they can do is make the user more observant,” says Dr. Roshni Mehta, a Mumbai-based dermatologist.
She recommends using such tools as “progress trackers” over time rather than one-time consultations.
While the scan flow is smooth, the app could improve its motion guidance:
Brands like Admigos suggest replacing the static capture screen with micro-motion overlays, similar to Instagram’s face filters, to improve scan consistency.
Skin Beauty Pal is a useful self-awareness tool and a strong gateway into better skincare habits. But it’s not a dermatologist.
